2023 Sun Diego Boardshops Am Slam Bash At The Beach Recap

2023 Sun Diego Boardshops Am Slam Bash At The Beach Recap

Another season of Am Slam ended Sunday afternoon. It was a wild season to say the least. Strange weather covered the landscape all weekend as the event featured rain in September (weird, right?) but that in no way cooled down the competition!

SURF

Saturday is the day that the surf pros get a chance to shine, and they did just that. Although, the conditions were challenging the surfers competed their butts off and threw down major scores throughout the day.

The finals featured a very familiar name as Victor Bernardo made his second final of the season. He took his Second victory of the season and came ever so close to stealing the overall season championship. He did it in dramatic fashion as with 1:00 minute remaining, he nabbed a right, boosted a frontside three and got the score he needed. Barely nipping overall season champ, Lucas Owston, who was leading for almost the entire heat! Kyan Yang and Rafael Pereira rounded out the final finishing 3rd and 4th respectively.

The 15+ am division saw a good mix of young rippers and some savvy vets as they took to their 20- minute final. Double finalist Rafael Pereira, from Venezuela, chucked big move after big move to take the victory over the stacked field that included Titus Santucci and season champ Kyan Yang, who took second.

In The 14U division we saw two newcomers battle it out for the W. Jett Maughn was able to hold off Portuguese ripper Thiago Pisseri to take the final by the slimmest of margins. Oliver Rowe took third and the overall season title!

Groms 11U was a victory lap for Encinitas upstart Owen Rowe. He had won all three events leading up to the finale and he finished off the quadfecta with another stellar performance. Can’t wait to see this kid continue to grow and get better!

The waves were tough for the Women's Longboard final. A drained-out tide and small beach break conditions tested competitors to the fullest. Star D’elia made the most of what was on offer to take the win and the overall season title with 3 victories out of the 4 events!!! What a season!

The Women's Shortboard final was a blow for blow exchange for the 20 minute final. Newcomer Sophia Johnston dropped hammers right from the get-go and put herself in great position to take a win in her inaugural event. The was a lot of back and forth but in the end. Sophia held on for the W.
