Sun Diego AM Slam Surf Series Presented by Vans Event #3 Pacific Beach

The first two event of the 2019 Am Slam Season had brought two absolutely packed to the gills events. With summer coming to a close one might think that the amount of people wanting to surf Am Slam would go down. That was anything but the truth, as we had 128 Surfers pack this event to make just as great as the first two. The weather was absolute So Cal perfection and although the waves were less than stellar it was a great day none the less!

Our Women’s Longboard final was given the tough task of having their final during dead low tide. Molly Tuschen made the most out of the difficult conditions and came out on top in the 20 minute affair.

The Boys Final was next and fortunately them the waves started to come back to life with the incoming tide. Points leader Kyan Yang and Brazilian upstart Gabriel Klaussner went back and forth during final with Gabriel getting the victory by a mere .2 points.

Jack Van Wagoner has been surfing the Am Slam for a couple of years now and yet to garner a victory in the longboard division. The talented regular footer is only 14 but shows maturity in his surfing that men would be grateful for. Saturday marked the first Am Slam victory for Jack and we are sure we will see many more.

Waves continued to improve as the finals commenced and Caleb Crozier took full advantage during the 15 and over final. He was the clear standout in a final that featured renegade Jake Szekely, older brother Micah, Mick Dave and Brazilians Davi Toledo and Phillipe Chagas! It was a great victory for the young Encinitas surfer as his surfing continues to get better and better.

After her victory in event #2 Sierra Downer was looking in form for yet another victory. Enter late entrant Serena Nava. She edge Sierra with two solid scores and narrowly took the victory by the slightest of margins. (.03) Sierra still sits on top of the rankings headed in to the final event of the season and looks forward to taking the season crown!

The Pro/Am final is usually the hottest heat of the day. The first two events of the season had seen amazing waves and performances from the surfers in the water. Saturday didn’t give the surfers much room to move in the water but they made do. Jose Lopez from Venezuela used some specialized equipment to generate speed in the small stuff and that really set him apart from the pack.  A Big air reverse and a solid left hander with a great three turn combo was all he needed to leave everyone else in his wake. Tour leader Tales Aroujo continued his blitz on the overall title with a second place finish. Three events down and three finals in the hotly contested division make for a commanding lead and he is the clear favorite to take down the $1000 prize for overall champ!

What a way to finish the last weekend of summer for a lot of kids!!! Thanks to all the people who came out and cheered on all the surfers. Thanks to all of our sponsors as well!
