Vans x Sun Diego AM Slam Surf San Clemente Recap

Check out what went down at the kick off event of Am Slam Surf Event 1...
AS18_Surf1_Placement_2 Here we go again! Our 5th year of bring the heat in the summer time! Sun Diego Am Slam Surf Series Presented by Vans kicked of June 3rd at San Clemente under a beautiful picturesque day in San Clemente! The waves were small but that didn’t stop all the competitors from flaring up! The Womens Longboard Final got underway in fun and soft conditions. Perfect for walking and noseriding. Sive Jarrard bested, sister, Lucy Jarrard with a nice array of cross stepping and flow to compel the judges to give her the nod for the win. The Womens Shortboard final was next and Bethany Zelasko ( Dana Point) was on fire!!! Her speed and power made a difficult task for anyone to match her. She came away with the unanimous decision and a boatload of prizes to boot. Bobby Hasbrook took the Men’s Longboard division by storm!!! His turns were impeccable and his cross stepping was smooth as butter. He embodied what longboarding is, a style fest. He crushed the competition to take the win and early ratings points lead. Waves were the issue in the Boys final. It was a story of the haves and have nots. All the groms were so equal in talent that they just needed the canvas to show their stuff. Tyrone Fomenko, last years Boys Champ, was the grom that the surf gods smiled on most in the final. He packed two solid set waves and killed them both finishing his second wave with a monster layback hack! The San Clemente kid finds himself in the same position that he ended last year. First. Ethan Mudge has been on a roll lately and it didn’t stop last weekend. The Third San Clemente local to win a division at this event took to the air to do so. He had a clean front side reverse and backed that up with a nice right that offered up three sections that he took advantage of with three searing turns. Taj Lindblad also of SC came close but was nipped on the strength of his back up. All in all a great back and forth between the two locals. Our last heat of the day turned out to be the best!!! Jeremy Carter, a new entry to the Am Slams, made his first final as he joined veterans Kei Kobayashi, Last year’s overall champ Maxsswell Rebeiro, and Micah Crozier. All four had to surf exceptionally well all day to even make the final and the great surfing continued through the twenty minute affair. Kei and Jeremy started to separate themselves as the heat continued with a combination of long lefts and punchy rights. Both looked strong but in the end Kei’s superior wave selection allowed for more critical maneuvers and He eventually gained the first place decision and his first AM Slam Pro Am Victory. What a great way to start off the year!!! San Clemente really showed what a great surf culture and vibe it has. WE can’t wait to get back!
