AM SLAM EVENT #2 PACIFIC BEACH.
The Sun Diego AM SLAM Surf Series Presented by Vans brought its brand of fun and big smiles to the shores of Pacific Beach Saturday July 8. Fun 2-3 ft. surf greeted competitors as well as some extremely hot summer weather, but that did nothing to stop the international field from putting on an amazing show!!!!
Ratings points and bragging rights were on the line in the hotly contested Boys division. San Clemente’s Nico Coli proved to be head and shoulders above the talent packed final. He took the win as well as the ratings points lead and an insane bag of goodies for the victory!!
Liam Murray (Sun Diego Team Rider) was truly the class of the Juniors division. He took the victory in dominating fashion. His smooth yet exciting array of maneuvers consistently wowed the judges and earned him his hold on the ratings points lead in the Juniors division.
The Women’s division had some thunder from down under as winner Claire Bevilaqua and runner up Denver Young (Both from OZ) were steps ahead of the Local girls. It was awesome to see how girls surfing as changed and vastly improved over recent years! The level continues to grow as women continue to try to close the gap between them and their male counterparts!
Last but not least was the Open Mens final. It is the AM SLAMS crown jewel division. The final was truly dominated in number and talent by South Americans! Three Brazilians, A Venezuelan, an Ecuadorian, and an American made up the finals field and it was a cracker of a heat.
Gabriel Farias (BRZ) is silky smooth and damn exciting to watch!! The 18 year old flared up big time in his first ever AM SLAM final. Simply put, he dominated, with a score line that would have won him any heat of the day. Expect to hear his name in the future!!
Other notable performances were Flynn Dartland and Alex Cockrell. These two groms surfed in the Boys division and the Open Longboard division. It was awesome to see these little guys cross stepping and throwing their gigantic boards around!!!
