18th Annual Transworld Skateboarding Awards
The Los Angeles Ace Hotel Theater hosted the 18th Annual Transworld Skateboarding Award last Friday. Check out the recap of the winners here. "I want to thank the squad and all my sponsors. You know who you are." Skateboarding is not "The Academy" and the 18th annual Transworld Skateboarding Awards are not the Oscars, although I'd bet a few stars would swap out their little gold nudist for black globe. At this point, the latter is way more exclusive. The winners of the evening were not unexpected, except perhaps Chris Joslin being snubbed of all victories after one of the heaviest years ever put down on four wheels. But stair counts don't earn style points and smooth operator Miles Silvas took home the Rookie of the Year with the nonchalant intro quote. After the honors and awards were distributed, Transworld screened the 27th title to their video catalogue: Substance. Without a single frame of HD footage, the feature was a brilliantly grainy breath of rare air in the age of gone-tomorrow web clips and RED Epic 4K Ultra 3D Blackmagic 120 FPS "Realer-than-real" that has become the goal of too many. Featuring Davis Torgerson, Jon Nguyen, Tom Karangelov, Dolan Stearns, and Tristan Funkhouser, Substance will be available via Vimeo On Demand this friday and iTunes March 14th. The video is raw and definitely a standout to the long canon of
